Analysis of a Sample of Tennessee Warblers Window-killed During Spring Migration in Manitoba

چکیده

arge numbers of passerine birds killed in collision with lighted structures during night migration flights, particularly in the fall, have yielded important information on the timing of migration of individuals of different ages and gender, route selection and geographic origins of migrants, and molt (e.g., Tordoff and Mengel 1956, Payne 1961, Kemper et al. 1966, Crawford 1978, Raveling and Warner 1978). Large, single samples of birds killed in this manner during the spring migration have been less frequenty reported (but see Hatler and Campbell 1975), although weather-caused mortality in spring occurs frequently (e.g., Green 1962, Whitmore et al. 1977, Zumeta and Holmes 1978).

Hazard assessment for a pharmaceutical mixture detected in the upper Tennessee River using Daphnia magna

Widespread use of pharmaceuticals has resulted in mixture concentrations ranging from mg/L in effluent to µg/L concentrations in surface water. In a 2008 study, 13 pharmaceuticals, ranging in amounts from 0.0028 to 0.1757 µg/l, were identified in the Tennessee River, USA and its tributaries. In order to address the need for risk assessment of environmentally relevant pharmaceutical mixtures, <e...

Linking the wintering and breeding grounds of warblers along the Pacific Flyway

Long-distance migration is a behavior that is exhibited by many animal groups. The evolution of novel migration routes can play an important role in range expansions, ecological interactions, and speciation. New migration routes may evolve in response to selection in favor of reducing distance between breeding and wintering areas, or avoiding navigational barriers. Many migratory changes are li...

A Long-Distance Avian Migrant Compensates for Longitudinal Displacement during Spring Migration

In order to perform true bicoordinate navigation, migratory birds need to be able to determine geographic latitude and longitude. The determination of latitude is relatively easy from either stellar or magnetic cues [1-3], but the determination of longitude seems challenging [4, 5]. It has therefore been suggested that migrating birds are unable to perform bicoordinate navigation and that they ...

Patterns of Stopover by Warblers during Spring and Fall Migration on Appledore Island, Maine

-Migrant warblers mist netted on Appledore Island, Maine, during spring and fall migration in 1990 and 199 1 allowed analysis of seasonal differences in stopover patterns, including recapture rates, stopover lengths, and changes in mass and fat during stopover. Northern Waterthrushes (Seiurus noveborucensis) and American Redstarts (Serophaga ruticilla) had higher recapture rates in the fall tha...
